General Eclectic
We are a chamber folk ensemble that sings old, recent, and new music. Currently we sing ‘a cappella’, a term which literally translates to “in the manner of the chapel”, but as our name implies, we’re open to R&D. We pull inspiration from a variety of genres and we are happy to cut our teeth on brand new music. We have two composers who arrange music for us with more to come. Our mission is to illuminate minds and hearts, ours and yours, through music. At the end of it all, we try to have fun and we hope you do too. We are General Eclectic! Let’s workshop this!
Meet our Eclectricians
John Hazucha - Tenor
Without this man, General Eclectic would not exist! John has decades of experience in vocal music and has shared many of his years with other professionals in pursuit of great sound. He is considered a leader among his peers and he understands what good music can be.
He works on AutoCAD designing electrical components, but don’t let his studious nature fool you. He has sung with the Apollo Club Men’s Chorus, Great Northern Union, and is an alum of St. Olaf’s choral program.
Now he wants to share his vision for good music with the rest of the world. John, married to Joy, is a proud father of four. His two sons join him in his quest for an eclectic vocal group of his own.
Stephen Hazucha - Tenor
John’s eldest son, Stephen, speaks French, he has a pet rock he named Guiseppe, and he likes to sniff glue: only one of these is true, but he won’t tell us which. Don’t let his calculated demeanor fool you because he’s always ready with a quip and a tune at a moment’s notice.
His primary occupation is snow removal; if you’re lucky, he might sing you tune while he clears your driveway! His recent experience includes singing with the Apollo Club with his father and brother. He also serves on their board of directors.
But seriously, Stephen has a knack for music; when he’s wrapping his mind around a new tune, he may not say as much but he glows with joy as he acquaints himself with a novel melody. His voracious appetite for the auditory arts was instilled in his childhood and he was fortunate to share this hunger with his brother.
John-Marc Hazucha - Baritone
As the youngest of John’s sons, John-Marc, brings much to the table. For example, he did that one thing that one time with the guys, you know, those guys. Also, he excelled at the other thing, moving people to tears. And we can’t forget that thing he did just awhile ago; that was so cool! You should have been there!
His recent experience includes serving as GM of a local Jamba Juice. When not getting juiced, he enjoys parkour. The other other thing he does is sing with the Apollo Club Men’s Chorus; a true family affair!
Truly, he may be quiet at times, but get him going on the right topic and you’ll be lacking in conversation no longer. He, like his brother, has been singing for most of his life. He excels at committing new music to memory. John-Marc does music for fun, but for him when something is fun, he throws himself in headfirst.
Phil Hunter - Bass
Phil is pretty cool. He can impersonate voices and characters and create new ones. His work in this area is featured in the acclaimed Northwoods Baseball Radio Network podcast at sleepbaseball.com. Check it out if you haven’t already!
As a young lad, Phil was always drawn to bass singers like Jon "Bowser" Bauman, Richard Sterban of the Oak Street Boys, J.D. Sumner and others. As a young man, he sang bass in choirs during his high school and college years. Music, even through adulthood, has always had a through line.
Now he sings with the Apollo Club Men’s Chorus and serves as the choir’s Sargent at Arms. He is respected among his peers for his humility and sharp sense of humor. Word of warning, he’s so friendly, you may feel compelled to buy him a beer!
Tyler Behny - Baritenor
An honorary Hazucha, Tyler, can be… chaotic. He says “yes” not for fear of saying “no”; he’d likely say “no” if he only knew the meaning. A glutton for punishment, he doesn’t know pain; he know’s the value of pain, but Tyler forgot pain’s name so now he’s just awkward around pain, especially at parties. He’ll eventually get a grip, but you may need to hand it to him.
Tyler is a baritone for Apollo Club Men’s Chorus, a 2nd tenor for South Metro Chorale, and a tintinnabulator for Bells of the Bluffs handbell choir. He has played bass guitar for all three choirs and frequently arranges music for his handbell choir.
Tyler keeps himself busy. As a singer, composer, and instrumentalist on strings, keyboards, and percussion, Tyler surrounds himself in song out of a deep-seated need to create. He sees new tunes and chord structures as something waiting to be discovered, shared, and enjoyed. He hopes to someday earn a living doing what he loves but then again, don’t we all?
